Farm To School – $1000 – Students only – 30 seconds to 3 minutes – Due: March 29th, 2010

Produce a 30 second to 3 minute video that informs, inspires, and encourages student advocacy to restore connections to community, food, land, and place through Farm to Cafeteria programs. It’s recommended to include the following elements:

1. What does real food mean to you?

2. How does what we eat affect our culture, health, economy, or environment?

Diversity in the Law – $1000 Scholarship – Students Only – Under 3 minutes – Due: April 1st, 2010

In celebration of Law Day this May, the Massachusetts Bar Association is holding its first video essay contest on the topic of “Diversity in the Law.” Submitted video essays should be original, family friendly entries in any format, which may include dances, poems, skits or any other combination of images and words.

First Five Of My Life – $1000 – Students Only – Under 120 seconds – Due: March 15th, 2010

Submit a video on the topic “First 5 in My Life” that is no longer than 2 minutes (120 seconds) in length. Video should either:

1. “Tell Your Story” – Entrants choosing to create a film in this category will identify a First Amendment issue in their community (city, county, or state); conduct interview(s) to gather information about the issue they have identified; analyze First Amendment implications related to the issue; draw a conclusion; and persuade viewers to accept their conclusion.

OR

2. “Report A National Story” – Entrants choosing to create a film in this category will respond to a prompt provided my the Bill of Rights Institute about a current First Amendment controversy; inform viewers about the facts of the issue; analyze the constitutional question; draw a conclusion; and persuade viewers to accept their conclusion.

Texas Co-op – $1500 – Student Only – 1 to 3 minutes – Due: April 9th, 2010

“Co-op Teens Power Texas” is a statewide competition open to high school students residing with a parent or legal guardian in a household served by an electric cooperative. Participating students, either working alone or in a group, will create a one- to three-minute video providing information about a developing area of renewable energy.

Could be anywhere—it’s up to you. Herman Miller, Inc., invites you to answer the question “Where do you learn best?” in our first Student Video Contest. 2010 Illinois High School Radon – $1000 – Illinois Students – Under 1 minute – Due: March 12th, 2010

The American Lung Association in Illinois (ALAIL) and Illinois Emergency Management Agency Radon Program (IEMA) along with University of Illinois Extension Office, Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 want to spread the word about the dangers of radon gas. Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas that causes lung cancer. The Surgeon General lists radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and it is also the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Fifty percent of Illinois counties are considered at high risk and we are seeking new and creative methods of informing the public.
To increase radon awareness, we are hosting a statewide radon video contest. We are calling on Illinois high school students and classes to create a 1 minute YouTube video that will increase public awareness of radon gas and encourage people to test their homes.
Participating schools must be certifi ed by the Illinois State Board of Education.
Submissions must all be submitted by March 12, 2010 at 5pm.
Judging of videos and selection of the winner will be determined by two entities equally:
(50% of overall score) Videos will be judged and ranked by a select state panel including members of sponsoring and partnering organizations. Judging criteria includes:
Video follows the rules and guidelines set for the contest
Creativity of the video
Originality of the video
Overall quality of the video
Video content
Accuracy of message in video
50% of overall score) Videos will be posted to www.proprofs.com/polls (keyword: Radon) from 3/17/10- 3/31/10 where the public will be able to view and vote for favorite. Links to voting site will also be available at
both ALAIL and IEMA websites.
After the time period for online voting has expired, members of the panel will compile results from both judging methods to determine the overall scores for each video. The winner will be decided from these scores.
2,000 prize awarded to winning school for curricular activities.
$1,000 prize awarded to the class/ individual who created the video.
Winning video will be featured on ALAIL and IEMA websites.

C-Span’s Studentcam – $5000 – Students Only – 5 to 8 minutes – Due: January 20th, 2010

C-SPAN’s StudentCam is an annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think seriously about issues that affect our communities and our nation. Students are asked to create a short (5-8 minute) video documentary that responds to one of the topics listed below:
A) One of our country’s greatest strengths;
-or-
B) A challenge the country is facing.
Requirements
1. Since C-SPAN’s philosophy is to show varying sides of an issue, winning StudentCam documentaries will provide the same treatment of their selected topic.
2. Include C-SPAN programming related to your topic
3. 5 to 8 minute time limit
4. Credits at the end of your documentary or a works cited list
This competition is open to entrants currently enrolled in middle or high school in any state in the United States, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. Students may be enrolled in public or private schools, or be home-schooled. Students in grades 6-8 will be considered “middle school” entrants; grades 9-12 will be considered “high school” entrants.
Entries must be received in the C-SPAN offices by January 20, 2010.
C-SPAN programming must be used to enhance the video documentary. The entry must include varying points of view. Win A Trip with Nick – Trip with Nicolas Kristof – Students Only – Under 3 minutes – Due: January 18th, 2010

NY Times columnist Nicholas Kristof is looking for a university student to take with him on a reporting trip to Africa, giving the student a chance to blog for nytimes.com and to file videos to The Times and Youtube.
You can apply either with an essay of up to 700 words, or a video of up to three minutes, or both. Send the essay to winatrip@nytimes.com. Post the video on his Youtube channel, www.youtube.com/NicholasKristof, next to Nick’s video invitation for applications. In either case, explain why he should pick you.
So what kind of a person is Nick looking for? Someone with excellent communication skills, who can blog and vlog (video blog) in ways that will capture the interest of other students. If you’ve done blogging, vlogging or journalism, be sure to mention that. Ditto for anything else that makes you special or will make your voice more memorable.
The Contest is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia (excluding Puerto Rico and all other territories), who are 18 years of age or older, and who are current undergraduate or graduate students (including those who will graduate in June) at an American college or university.
The application deadline is a minute before midnight, Eastern Time, on Monday, Jan 18.

HMSA Teen Video Awards – $1000 – Hawaii Students Only – 27 Seconds – Due: March 1st, 2010

The HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest, now in its seventh year, is presented by the Department of Education’s Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
The contest is open to students from middle and high schools in Hawaii. Students are asked to create an original 27-second public service announcement in one of the following categories:
Fitness/nutrition
Drug-free
Tobacco-free
Underage drinking prevention
Social health (i.e., sexually transmitted diseases, Internet safety, etc.)
This year, in conjunction with the “Not Even Once” meth campaign, we will be giving special recognition to PSAs that deal with this topic.
The contest gives students the opportunity to create health messages that reach and impact their peers. In the process, students will learn about the video creation process, which includes script writing, video production, and copyright and privacy laws.
Open to middle school and high school students in Hawaii.
The entry for deadline is Monday, March 1st, 2010 4pm.
Videos will be judged as follows:
Content (25 percent of score): Is the message clear? Is information accurate and pertinent? If any third-party content is incorporated in the video, have appropriate releases or licenses been secured?
Effectiveness/Impact (25 percent of score): Does the video appeal to youth? Does it make an impact on viewers?
Creativity (25 percent of score): Is the video the original work of students that has not previously been broadcast on television? Is it creative?
Videography (25 percent of score): Does the video contain high-quality images and sound?
Winning PSAs will be broadcast on local television stations. Winners and their schools will also receive:
Cash to purchase video equipment or software:
1st place in each category – $1,000
2nd place in each category – $500
3rd place in each category – $250
Best of Show – An additional $1,000
Recognition in aired television PSA.
